This book tells the story of two sisters growing up in the 1970s. One sister is pugnacious and unafraid, the other an albino (the titular "anomaly") who is shy and frustrated at being treated like a freak. The novel follows the two sisters from childhood to adolescence, portraying two characters who change and grow as their life circumstances change. The other narrative thread, which intertwines with the stories of the two sisters, involves the reminiscences of a family friend who was a nurse in the war.
