Simultaneously comic and tragic, satiric and idealistic, intellectual and vulgar, formal and colloquial, the distinctive quality of his poems has often been described with the word "quirky". "Humane" is probably the second most common adjective that has described poems whose classical humanism is complimented as quirky in the prevailing climate.
