History of the U. S. Border Patrol... This time of the River Riders, also known as "Tick Riders," began protecting the Texas borders in the fall of 1868. Their titles may have changed over the years, along with rules of conduct for each rider; but each one did his job as instructed. On the information gathered, the name, "River Riders" stayed even through the years till 1967, and "Tick Rider" name, is still used today.
