The man, the woman, and the man with the gun struggle against each other and together in their attempts to survive severe snowstorms, a lake tsunami that strips the pines from the cliffs, an enormous bear, and wildfires that ravage the mountains and the rural town situated upon the alpine lake shores. Rattlesnakes kill babies. Eagles kill rattlesnakes. The woman kills rapists. The city in the valley burns to the ground. Snowbound emigrants resort to cannibalism. The characters forget language and re-learn it, and all the time create, destroy, create again, and rename the world. Blending science, mythology, and history, The Lake chronicles the titular setting’s creation, and follows the humans who inhabit The Lake, going back to prehistory and traveling up to the contemporary era.
