For several years, the popular and controversial artist Hariton Pushwagner was homeless and addicted to drugs. Now, he experiences a major artistic breakthrough in Norway as well as internationally.
Pushwagner presents a personal and analytical view into Pushwagner’s artistic world and biography. The book also portrays his way of thinking, his social criticism and his paradoxical personality. But it is also the story of how the close collaboration with the author Axel Jensen influenced his artistic development and belief in himself.
The core of Pushwagner consists of the artist’s main works Apocalypse, A Day in the Life of Family Man and the graphic novel Soft City. In 2008, more than thirty years after it was completed, Soft City was both published and shown at the 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art.
For the first time, Pushwagner’s story, accompanied by a wide selection of artwork and photos, is published and thus made available to a larger public.
Petter Mejlænder is an author and cultural journalist. He has worked for Norway’s national radio and has written several books on various subjects, such as Arne Næss, Axel Jensen, philosophy and ethics.
