Deathrun? A young man's habit of telling the truth gets him into all manner of pickles. Mostly with members of the opposite sex. Toby Wheedon's sudden belief-that Fate has taken a personal interest in him-begins on the night he wins the Lottery. Nothing out-of-the-ordinary had ever happened to him before. With the next assignment of his correspondence course he includes the details in a letter. Only the runner-up prize. For some unknown reason the Hand of Fate had passed the jackpot to somebody else. The letter brings a reply by return from the College of Journalistic Excellence. An offer to him as Pupil of the Year of personal tuition at their headquarters in Camden Town, London. At last-after many false leads and dead ends-it seems he is setting out on his life work as an investigative reporter. And then the Hand of Fate nudges Toby again. How else can he explain the encounter with Ginger on a Sunday morning run along Regent's Park Canal? More a collision than an encounter. The red-headed man collapses. Apparently with a heart attack. Two doctors arrive by Chance it seems and carry him off. Even more compelling is the lottery ticket slipped into his newspaper. A winning ticket worth ninety-seven thousand pounds! Naturally Toby is determined to return the ticket to its rightful owner. But his efforts to track Ginger down are impeded by his boozy mentor - who thinks they should cash in the ticket and keep the money - and complicated by the arrivals separately of two ex-girlfriends. Even his sweet little angel-the girl he falls in love with-deliberately misleads him. Toby however doggedly follows the trail. Even when matters take a somewhat sinister turn.
