Public intellectual and provocateur Tomaj Pangolin overhears a mysterious word while crashing a swanky party and determines to discover its meaning. Unbeknownst to Pangolin, this quest for the meaning of the word "Marvedyne" weaves through the lives of myriad others as well, including his artistic step-daughter and computer-savvy godson, a spy with a tragic past, a baron and his family, two young cinema zinesters, a collectivist pop-star and her hard-boiled assistant, a film-maker turned aristocratic gangster, a mysterious double-jointed gunman, and a race of extra-terrestrial beings.
