A portrait of a lady, which if uncharitable, is also uncomfortably recognizable and which throws a sharp focus on Madge, whose commercial instincts and material aims defeat her ends. In her marriage to Les, easygoing, affectionate, Madge drives hard and gives little, achieves an ascendant social position with the right house, the right Club, but finally drives Les away to his death with another woman. In her marriage to Charlie, who accepts her two children as his own but adds two in his own name, she is unable to goad and prod, and finally alienates him altogether when her concern for money is shamefully exposed. And when she threatens to ruin her oldest boy, it is Charlie who intercedes and is able to deflect her...
