The Examination

In this novel set in 16th-century China, two very different brothers--the scholarly Chen and the seemingly flighty Hong--travel together to Beijing where Chen will be taking part in a palace examination. As the brothers journey across China, they encounter famine, flood, plague, and pirates. Will Hong's involvement with the White Lotus society--a secret group planning to overthrow the government--land the brothers in hot water?
