Stehekin, Washington. November 1940. Cars park in one lot over the winter, the ranger station has the only telephone, and it can only be reached by boat or floatplane. She finds the body of Hal Volker, a fly fishing expert friend of her father’s. Fellow reporter and admirer Seth Laske is sent to help with background information.
