A messy young girl owns a very elegant cat, Evangelina. Evangelina would prefer to live with the girl's refined, swanlike neighbor, Cecilia. Cecilia owns a cat, too: the scruffy, rough-and-tumble Ms. Whiz, who would (of course) rather live with the narrator.
The cats know where they belong; so do the girls. Only their parents insist the cats must stay where they don't belong. When Cecilia and Whiz move away, it seems that both cats and their owners will be unhappy forever - but Whiz solves the problem herself, to the satisfaction of all, in this fresh, lively tale of two very different girls and their very different cats.
