Alan is straight, Sam is gay. Set in Brighton, East Sussex, the novel tells of the relationship that existed between the two of them. Set out in diary form it follows the development, the frustration on both sides and the pressures put on them. Unable to meet together at either homes, they resort to the gay cruising site up on the Downs.
