Dalwhinnie, a strait-laced, pernickety Edinburgh lawyer, receives a visit at his New Town home from a most important client, the unpredictable Marquis of Foggieloan. He is shocked to discover that his Marquis wants to divorce the Marchioness, who has been carrying on with the Head Piper. Dalwhinnie's inquiries reveal that the Marquis also wishes to marry again - and that the new object of his affection is Dalwhinnie's wife. The Play's two male characters are strongly contrasted. The obsequious Dalwhinnie is so in awe of the aristocracy that when the Marquis announces he wants his wife, his principal objection is that he would be marrying beneath him. The Marquis, on the other hand, obsessed by hair-brained, money- making schemes, has an equally impulsive approach to marriage.
