Is there life after death? In the late 1800s, a young man is compelled by personal loss and strange occurrences to seek an answer to that question. Hauntings or hoaxes? Explained or inexplicable? The 19th century was an era of scientific discovery and invention, yet this age also gave rise to the spiritualist movement, a passion for séances and the Victorian fascination with Gothic tales and ghost stories. In this milieu, a young correspondent for the New-York Tribune begins with a reporter's skepticism for the supernatural, but over time, as he attends séances and reports on people who claim to be able to commune with the dead, his curiosity is piqued. As the years progress, Edward Seymour’s views begin to shift as he is assigned far-reaching news stories, ranging from the battlefields of the American Civil War to the parlours of famous mediums. Along the way, clever and captivating real-life individuals, such as Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, play a role in his search through real-life, documented incidents of supernatural occurrences.
