An expatriate and film financier living on the fringes of the film world, just as he lives on the fringes of Roman and Parisian society, is courted by European film directors and by Americans on their way out of Hollywood due to the power which his position gives him.

It is years after his departure from California when he encounters her in an Italian villa one hot afternoon. The girl with whom he had once lain on a secluded California beach. The girl whose family had been so strange. There was Dolores. Almost at once she slips away. But now that he knows she is in Rome, he begins his search for Dolores, who had always, somehow, slipped away.

This was David Stacton's first novel.
